History

Tibet was unified by the King Songtsän Gampo in the 7th Century.

At various times between the 1640’s and the 1950’s, a government headed by the Dalai Lamas, a line of spiritual political leaders, ruled over the Tibetan Region, although Tibet remains a vassal under the Chinese sovereignty.

In 1913, the 13th Dalai Lama proclaimed the independence of Tibet. This was not accepted by the Government of China, neither recognized by the foreign countries.

Between 1950 and 1951, Tibet was invaded by the Communist Troops of China and by May 1951, the Tibetan Government conceded to the Chinese and gave up its independence. Tibetans signed a treaty that gave the Dalai Lama domestic power, but any affairs related to foreign or military matters must be defer to the Chinese Government.

After the installation of a pro-Chinese Administration, the first decisions brought a severe famine, suppressed civil rights and imposed the Chineses language in the Autonomous Region of Tibet.

In March 1959, Lhasa population obliged the Dalai Lama to escape in India with a group of Tibetan leaders and followers. There they set up the Government of Tibet in Exile, in Dharamshala, in disagreement with the Chinese authorities.

Since the 1970’s, the Red Guards are used to destroy official Tibetan buildings and monasteries, burn Tibetan libraries and books and kill pro-Tibetan people in order to erase the Tibetan culture.

All these matters occur in spite of the speeches and the repressions coming from the International Community.
